Welcome to the website of the Jamestown Classic, the largest bicycle Road Race in Rhode
Island. On Columbus Day,
Monday, October 12, 2009 we will celebrate the 34th edition of this fun
event. The race is the main fundraising event for the Jamestown Rotary Club. Proceeds from the race are used to
support local, national and international causes. In recent years, these funds have been used to purchase wheelchairs
for underprivileged individuals in Nicaragua, create a women's literacy project in Ghana, purchase new music
chairs for the Jamestown Middle School, support the local Boy Scouts with respect to the purchase of a new trailer,
contribute toward research for a cure to ALS (Lou Gehrig's Disease) and assist in the maintenance of a clean water
project in Cambodia, among other noteworthy items. Quite simply, these projects would not be possible without your
support and participation in the Jamestown Classic Bicycle Race.
We have made some minor changes in the format this year. We have added a Fun Ride open to all of those riders
who have never raced before. We will not be holding the "Childrens' Race". Novice riders may once again race in the Cat 5
events by purchasing a "one day" license. We have eliminated the Pro 1, 2, 3 and have separated the Womens Open Category
into Womens 1 / 2 and Womens 3 / 4 (which is part of the Womens 3 / 4 Series).
Racing begins at 8:15 AM in sequenced starts. Some of the best racers from
the Northeast and beyond compete in the USCF sanctioned series with the
following categories: Men's Masters divisions, Men's Cat 4; Men's Cat 5 divisions;
Women's 1/2 and Women's 3/4; and four Junior
categories that qualify for the LAJRS (Lance Armstrong Junior
Racer Series).
If you hold a USCF license and want to race
with the best including present and former US champions, this is your chance.
If you want to move into USCF competition, but have never tried, secure
a one-day license (available on-site) and go for it. If you just want to race or ride for fun, enter the Fun Ride
(no license required).
Jamestown offers one
of the most scenic race venues with a course that circuits the island with
stretches of bucolic forest and farmland to vistas of the East and West
Passages of Narragansett Bay, the Newport Bridge and historic lighthouse
at Beavertail. What a way to celebrate Columbus Day - Discover Jamestown,
lift your spirits as you help the Jamestown Rotary Club support worthy causes in
this community and the world. Register
